BIACS India Day 2016

The Bluegrass Indo American Civic Society (BIACS) hosted its 4th annual India Day festival on September 18th, 2016 at the Moondance Amphitheater. The festival brought different cultures from across India together with entertaining performances and had people from all over Lexington in attendance. Paul Laurence Dunbar’s most advanced orchestra started the program with three Indian songs and the national anthems of India and America. Performances included songs, yoga demonstrations, classical and Bollywood dances, and a fashion show. The yoga demonstration had many event attendees participating, the fashion show displayed women’s fashion from different parts of India, and the singers performed many popular Bollywood songs. The dances included performances by the Shree School of Dance, Spinning Sisters, Kentucky Karana (UK’s Bollywood fusion dance team) and more. In addition, there were food stalls with mouth-watering Indian cuisine, hands-on activity stalls for children setup by the local tutoring clubs, stalls for information about allergy and asthma, and stalls selling Indian clothing, fashion jewelry and henna at the festival. Kentucky Senator Reginald Thomas attended the festival and gave a welcoming speech to everyone in attendance. With its exciting atmosphere, India Day is for sure not an event anyone should miss!

Uttarakhand Relief Fund

Our heart goes out for those unfortunate visitors and local residents who were trapped in the major floods and landslides in Uttarakhand / Garwal hills. This is such a large scale disaster that just government alone cannot do much, unless Indians from all corners of the globe come together and help.

Some of you may be wondering if it's too late to offer any help. However, rebuilding and rehabilitation from this unprecedented tragedy will be a long and drawn out process. After the initial search and rescue efforts are over and the spotlight is out, the local residents will need all the help the can get to survive the coming winter and sometime thereafter until they can stand on their own. They lost everything and have nowhere to go. These are good, honest people who have fallen upon bad, tumultuous times.
Please join us in this rebuilding process. You can donate through Uttarkhand Mandal of America by following instructions at their website,www.umaus.org or by sending a check to BIACS, P.O. Box 910666, Lexington, KY 40591. All donations made through BIACS are tax exempt.
